History
HistoryThe Dunlap Community Fire Protection District is an ISO Class 4 District proudly protecting 8000 people in an area of 59 square miles. We operate two fire stations and 10 pieces of apparatus. Our department is a paid-on-call department that also uses part-time members to staff fire stations during certain hours of the day.
The Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad was established in 1899. We have a tradition of service to our community, and a history of striving for the best training and equipment. We have been leaders in EMS, from our first rescue truck thirty-seven years ago, Hurst extrication equipment, and AEDs put into service as soon as allowed by the State of Illinois.

Our emergency responses include structure fires, vehicle fires, grass fires, smoke alarms, and rescue calls. Additionally, our staff perform building inspections, building permit plan approvals, code enforcement, fire prevention programs and provide two three-hour training sessions for our firefighters each week. There are approximate 38 unpaid professionals (volunteers, if you like) in the department. Our firefighters are trained to the Illinois Firefighter II Certification, and many are also licensed at Illinois Emergency Medical Technicians.
The Dunlap Community Fire District operates two fire stations. The main station is a t 400 North Fourth Street in Dunlap. Station One was built in 1968, and a major addition was built in 1983. There are five pieces of apparatus at this station, as well as the main training facilities and offices. Our fire station Two is at 11920 North State Route 40, near Lake of the Woods. Station Two was built in 1995. We have three pieces of apparatus at that fire station.
The District was formed by a voter referendum in 1947. The Dunlap Fire Department’s roots can be traced from records dating back to 1899. The referendum formed a fire district that serviced an area including all of Radnor Township, the western third of Medina Township, the eastern third of Jubilee Township, and the northeast half of Kickapoo Township. As the City of Peoria has grown by annexing, it has taken away large portions of the Dunlap Community Fire Protection District, leaving us today with a service area of fifty-seven square miles. Some of the places included in our service area today are the Village of Dunlap, Meadowood, Alta, Alta Gardens, Medina Meadows, Lake of the Woods Estates, Cedar Bluffs Estates, Strathmore Estates, Hickory Grove Estates, Bennington Park part one, Savanna, Midget Farms, Mt. Hawley Manor, Nettle Creek, Deerfield, LeMar Acres, and the Jubilee College Historical Site.
