History
The Dunlap Community Fire Protection District is an ISO Class 4 District proudly protecting 10,000 people in 59 square miles. We operate two fire stations and a fleet of eight apparatus. Our department is a hybrid department that also uses part-time members to staff fire stations during certain hours of the day.
The Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad was established in 1899. We have a tradition of service to our community and a history of striving for the best training and equipment. We have been leaders in EMS, from our first rescue truck to adding Hurst extrication equipment and AEDs put into service as soon as allowed by the State of Illinois.
Our emergency responses include structure fires, vehicle fires, grass fires, smoke alarms, and rescue calls. Additionally, our staff performs occupancy surveys, fire prevention programs and provides weekly training sessions for our firefighters. Our firefighters are trained to the Illinois Basic Operations Firefighter Level; many are licensed as Illinois Emergency Medical Technicians.
The Dunlap Community Fire District operates two fire stations. The main station is at 400 North Fourth Street in Dunlap. Station One was built in 1968, and a major addition was built in 1983. This station has five pieces of apparatus and houses the main training facilities and offices. Fire Station Two, built in 1995, is located 11920 North State Route 40, near Lake of the Woods.
The District was formed by a voter referendum in 1947. The Dunlap Fire Department’s roots can be traced from records dating back to 1899. The referendum formed a fire district that serviced an area including all of Radnor Township, the western third of Medina Township, the eastern third of Jubilee Township, and the northeast half of Kickapoo Township.
